In this intensive, we focus on the relationship between form and surface. You will work with four different types of stoneware clay, learning how each unique clay body reacts, feels, and fires. By understanding the “why” behind the material, you gain the confidence to push your creative boundaries.
What You’ll Learn
Explore slab and pinching techniques across four distinct clay types to understand the unique characteristics, shrinkage, and textures of each.
Learn a wide range of decorative methods to transform the texture and appearance of your forms. This is a space for high-volume experimentation with various tools and applications.
Complete the journey by glazing your experimental pieces to see how different clay bodies and surface textures interact with various finishes.
Once you’ve mastered these materials, you are fully prepared to utilize these specialized clays during a 100-Hour Residency to develop a cohesive, large-scale body of work.
